New works by

Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom

Exhibition Dates: 5th February - 6th March

Gallery Primo Alonso is delighted to present backwash, Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom’s first solo show after graduating from the Royal Academy of Art. This show comes as a result of the Gallery’s first residency program allowing Boakye-Yiadom complete freedom to create his work within the gallery space for two months.

In Boakye-Yiadom’s work, the ready-made object is used to instigate a performance, where an irrepressible form or movement is enforced upon it. The uncontrollable act allows the object to exceed its parameters subsequent to the imposed action, gradually gaining pulse, momentum and life of its own; exploring the expansion of the past and present existing in the moment.  Each piece undergoes an individual transformation, existing within the moment of transition from object to sculpture and sculpture to installation and is also expressed through video.

Examining nostalgia, the admirable from art archive and the accessible object, he draws influences from painting, the ready made, the domestic, window display and monumental architecture.  This accumulation of visual reference creates humanistic, beautiful pieces. The enigmatic absence of the artist in the action undermines the dogmatic act that transforms the object. The idea brought into conversation short-circuited by form.
